Honestly this is one of the things I couldn't stand about the bay area. Tons of people that think they're hot stuff and the rest of the country is a dump pile.

Honestly this is one of the things I couldn't stand about the bay area. Tons of people that think they're hot stuff and the rest of the country is a dump pile. It reflects in HN comments all the time.
The reality is Ohio State is actually a good university and there's really solid talent out there too. You also have Chicago not all that far away that's a big talent hub.

- FullyFunctional 5y agoThis is getting old. I've lived in the Bay Area for 20+ years and guess what, the Bay Area != San Francisco (I personally go to SF less than once every two years).

- FullyFunctional 5y agoIndeed how? If they really mean SF, then write that. Bay Area is much greater and much more than SF. San Jose alone is larger in area and people than SF and Bay Area is much much more than San Jose. I'm trying to spread awareness to people not from here that the two things aren't the same at all. It's bad enough that media convulsively regurgitate the same tired fallacy repeatedly.

- nescioquid 5y agoPerhaps if you consider that when people speak of the Bay Area, this is sometimes an example of metonymy (or even in another sense, synedoche), you wouldn't feel the need raise everyone's awareness of San Jose.

- tottenhm 5y agoThe whinging hits everyone. Look at any HN story involving the Bay Area, and you'll see a dozen subthreads about how it's a post-apocalyptic hellscape. (But it's home, you know.) Speaking as an elitist left-wing hippie-business-geek-bro-demon in the Bay Area... Kudos to the Columbus Area! Ohio, build it up!
- nitwit005 5y agoAs far as I can tell, every part of the country dumps on every other part of the country. Sometimes including other parts of their own state.
- BurningFrog 5y agoBeen a few years since I heard anyone claim the bay area or SF was really great. We had our time. It was great. Now a new era starts.
