I've always been curious what the "that" in "I'd do anything for love, but I won't do that." was. He refused to answer it on a talk show I watched a long time ago and I was always curious.
Not 100% my style of music but he did have a great voice.
- gremlinsinc 5y agoWell, he left a family behind, but refused to get vaccinated.. So maybe it was that.
- Theizestooke 5y agoI think he was an abuse victim, so that might be related.
- williamtwild 5y agoNot even close
- scrapheap 5y agoIf you want to know what the "that" was, I suggest you listen to the full song and you'll have your answer.
- wodenokoto 5y agoHe hasn't refused. I believe he said it was an annoying question, because it was obviously in the lyrics. Fx, > And I would do anything for love I'd run right into hell and back I would do anything for love I'd never lie to you and that's a fact But I'll never forget the way you feel right now, Oh no, no way And I would do anything for love, but I won't do that No, I won't do that In the first verse "that" refers to "never forget the way you feel right now" I gotta admit, even after I was told it was in the lyrics I couldn't find it and needed someone to show me before I got it.
- jrootabega 5y agoThere's also the "sooner or later you'll be screwing around" line he replies to
- wodenokoto 5y agoThere is one thing he won't do in every verse. Wikipedia has the whole thing listed, so I just link there: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27d_Do_Anything_for_Love_(But_I_Won%27t_Do_That)#Perceived_ambiguity_of_%22that%22 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27d_Do_Anything_for_Love_(Bu...
- kodachrome64 5y agoWhile you're correct, I think the problem is that the way the line is phrased seems to imply "I would do anything for love, but I won't do that for love." Even knowing Meatloaf's intention, the whole song seems to be suggesting that there's something his lover is begging him to do that he outright refuses. I doubt she's asking him to "forget the way she feels," or "screw around," so it feels like there's a question left unanswered. The Wikipedia article for the song even touches on this ambiguity with the debate between Steinman and Meatloaf over the use of the word "but" versus "and" in the line: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27d_Do_Anything_for_Love_(But_I_Won%27t_Do_That) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27d_Do_Anything_for_Love_(Bu...
