The alternative was having dead bodies stacked high in makeshift morgues like commandeered ice rinks with the military running frenetically to keep emergency field hospitals from collapsing while gather up the dead.
I know that because I lived through it in Spain in its first covid wave. I remember very vividly the army trucks speeding through the streets, and the covid hotline being totally overwhelmed without a better answer to give people beyond "just stay put and don't go to hospitals because they already can't cope". I recall experiencing covid symptoms which were gradually getting worse to the point I didn't knew I was going to wake up the next day, without anyone or anything to turn to. I recall their mobile app to report symptoms, and how they called back when I stopped using the app to perform a death check.
I also recall that rigorous 3 week lockdowns were all it took to decimate the spread of the disease and death rate, and how their effect is sabotaged by those who refuse basic higiene, health and safety measures like social distancing, washing hands, and wear a face mask.
Is it hard to endure a lockdown? Yes it is. But I lived the alternative first-hand and I need to say it is much much harder. Perhaps the hardest is seeing all these people actively sabotaging any chance to make covid stop being a problem
