One of the major issues IMO is the fact that there's very limited time budgeted to history in schools. If you want to learn a broad array of subjects in high school (and you usually need to do that), you won't get that many history lessons, and the world is a big place and history spans a long time. We even had problems covering just European and our national history in the time allocated. It would have been great to be able to learn more but that would have made our high school just a school of history.
