I think Hillel Wayne needs to go further down this trajactory. Focusing on the classification individual workers is myopic. The fact is, the computing industry in the US arose during a huge wave of deindustrialization and offshoring. It has grown up in a completely different economic context. This, more than anything intrinisic to the field, influences the norms. This macro perspective must be the starting point.
