A good reminder to the UK government why end-to-end encryption is absolutely necessary.
- sofixa 5y agoWhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted, which doesn't help when one of the ends forwards the messages to the police.
- antisthenes 5y agoOr when you get the good old "give us your phone and unlock it or we beat you with a wrench" treatment, which bypasses any sort of encryption altogether.
- josephcsible 5y agoOff-the-Record Messaging uses deniable authentication to fix this problem. Instead of proving that a message could only have come from the real sender, it proves that it must have come from either the sender or the recipient. If you are the recipient, you know you didn't write it, but you have no way to prove that to anyone else.
- awb 5y agoAny apps using that currently?
- josephcsible 5y agoYes, a bunch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Off-the-Record_Messaging#Client_support https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Off-the-Record_Messaging#Clien... And Signal also has deniable authentication, although its protocol is a bit different than Off-the-Record Messaging.
