This is absolutely right. For any movement, there are those that take an uncompromising extreme view. This is not to appeal to the other side, but to move the goal posts as far in their direction as possible. Think Stallman, Nader, Ron Paul. They serve a purpose to the movement -- providing arguments that can be crafted by those that seek to convert and making others seem less extreme by comparison. One attribute that they must have to perform this effectively is to never compromise, and instead to keep pushing the envelope.
