The EU Wants Its Own DNS Resolver That Can Block 'Unlawful' Traffic
- junon 5y agoI don't see how this is remotely feasible...
- bradwood 5y agoI was wondering about this too. Setting aside DNS over HTTPS, I can't see it either. Will every router in the EU do L4 switching to rewrite traffic to port 53? Assuming it can even be pulled off, I can only see if failing badly.

- salawat 5y agoStrictly adhering to Hanlon's Razor tells us we should find that poor unfortunate Nigerian Prince who was too stupid to get out of his own way.
- junon 5y agoExactly. It makes no sense to me how this could even begin to work.
- wait_a_minute 5y agoI don’t trust the nanny state of the EU, or of any nation, to be able to block “illegal content” this way. Today it’s “think of the children” fearmongering to justify it. Tomorrow it’s gulag for anyone who isn’t on board with whatever orthodoxy takes hold of the EU. Dark times ahead if someone like Macron, for example, can block content he deems illegal. They will strip people of a voice even more aggressively than they’d like to do right now.
- peoplefromibiza 5y agoAs an European, if I think about "not being on board with the orthodoxy" current DNS system that relies on Google or Cloudflare is far more dangerous for me than an European run infrastructure. EU is frankly more liberal as of today than any other continent on the planet, I'm not scared of a guglag resurgence anytime soon. Anyway, the article quotes the proposal, think of the children it's not there, it's about something more reasonable "DNS4EU shall offer a high level of resilience, global and EU-specific cybersecurity protection, data protection and privacy according to EU rules, ensure that DNS resolution data are processed in Europe and personal data are not monetised”
- wait_a_minute 5y agoMore liberal? Don't make me laugh. EU doesn't even allow free movement or free participation in society anymore unless you give in to "show me your papers please"
- peoplefromibiza 5y ago> EU doesn't even allow free movement or free participation in society anymore unless you give in to "show me your papers please" Please, don't do that, not here. It's stupid.
- wait_a_minute 5y agoWhat’s stupid is what you tolerate there while you say it’s the most liberal place.
- peoplefromibiza 5y ago“Stupid is as stupid does” stop doing it. Illiberal is a nazi attack on the Capitol Hill. What's stupid is tolerate this The city of Los Angeles has seen nearly 400 killings at the end of 2021 Los Angeles has a population of 3.9 million people, in Italy, where I live, in 2021 there have been 277 homicides with a population of 59 million people. To put is simply: LA has over 100 homicide per million, Italy has 4.7 Tolerate that people are being killed on the streets like rats is stupid.
- omegalulw 5y agoBasic question: why are all these blocks at the DNS level? If I want to block users of my network from accessing website X, why would I not block it at the IP level (level 3) by blocking all packets to all IP address that other DNS providers associate with website X?
- josephcsible 5y agoBecause of CDNs like Cloudflare, that are basically name-based virtual hosting.
- netheril96 5y agoIf you want blocking to be effective you will need China style GFW. DNS block + IP blacklist + deep packet inspection.
- Axien 5y agoAh yes. Another great proposal from the people who came up with the idea you must accept cookies from websites.
- peoplefromibiza 5y agothe same people that exposed a problem: websites track users even when they shouldn't in such an aggressive way that it should be illegal everywhere in the World, or at least in those countries that put "free" in their names.
