Amazon Lord of the Rings Title Revealed: The Rings of Power
- jleyank 5y agoIt will be interesting what they can do with (or without?) access to Tolkien's IP outside LoTR and Hobbit. I forget where things stand, but can't remember the family ever being amenable to this kind of thing. The good part is that we know the ultimate result but there's a lot of stuff that can go into things falling and people dying with good writing and/or effects. Unless they're going to go "all Kelvin" and make something in the spirit of Tolkein, etc. Fortunately, given the internet, we'll know in microseconds.
- jfengel 5y agoIt was mostly Christopher, Tolkien's literary executor, who was absolutely opposed. He passed away a few years ago. This project was announced about the same time that he retired from being executor. They appear to have the rights to the Silmarillion material, which provides most of what is known about the Second Age (when this series is set). That material isn't very long, only a few dozen pages; it's more an outline than an actual story. So it would absolutely have to be "in the spirit of Tolkien" rather than an actual story. But they appear to have access to the "canonical" material, which is enough to craft a story that would be satisfyingly consistent. This appears to also draw on the other chapter, "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age", which is mostly about the material covered in Lord of the Rings, but provides important detail about what Sauron was doing at the time of Numenor. It could help inform a story about how Sauron led to [spoiler alert] the destruction of Numenor.
