Interesting metaphor. I was going to say a mindmap, but nerve cells also make sense. I also have the same code smell litmus test, if two different paths call the same thing twice (aka they both link to the same place), but like you said sometimes it's unavoidable. With microservices things get a little bit more complex though. Anyway, very apt metaphor.
