It's interesting to observe how environmental concerns go out the window, when there is a financial incentive.
The fossil fuel companies were justly condemned when they suppressed research around global warming.
Sometimes even by the same people who have a high-stake in proof-of-work cryptocurrencies...
...who then try to make every justification for their proof-of-work cryptocurrency, when it should be within our ability to develop a currency that offers similar features, without wasting large amounts of electricity that could be used for other purposes.
- lazyeye 5y agoThere already are many cryptocurrencies that dont use proof of work. Its first generation, obsolete tech. Cardano, for example, is 1000 times more energy efficient than Bitcoin https://adan.eu/en/article/blockchain-protocol-energy-footprint https://adan.eu/en/article/blockchain-protocol-energy-footpr... And the idea that proof of work can be ok because its done with renewable energy is stupid to me. That renewable energy could be powering something far more useful.
