The Beat of a Different DRM
- dane-pgp 5y ago> With Windows 11 requiring a TPM, and with the Pluton chip available to provide TPM features, this missing piece can now fall into place. ... The first place you will see this enforced is likely in video games. I'm glad to see this astute observation that we are reaching the endgame in terms of locking down general purpose computers. The enemy has slowly encircled us with overwhelming weaponry, and now it can quietly pick off our freedoms one by one. Even if someone raises the alarm, it will be too late. > The primary goal for all of these vendors is to have an app store on laptops and desktops that can act as the sole gatekeeper for what software is allowed on their platforms. What is missing, though, is consideration of Level 10 of the OSI model, namely politics. If a vendor has an interest in exercising control over their platform, consider how much more interest a government has in exercising control over all platforms. Of course, in democracies we should all be delighted that the government will be able to use the law to control all software in a way that is beneficial for society, but people in countries where the government doesn't reflect the wishes of the population might not look forward to the sort of policies that will be forced on vendors.
