Show HN: I Built HN for Crypto
- r00t4ccess 5y agoThe name of the site is instantly off putting for me.
- SuDa2103 5y agoAha okay noted
- senectus1 5y agothere is definitely a masculine toxic theme in the crypto culture (especially in the Wallstreet* scene). Not saying your site pushes that, just that the scene has that culture around it and hodl is a part of that culture by association.
- garren 5y agoI think the name works - OP has a target audience in mind and the name speak to that. In fact I immediately thought of hodle.rs as a suggestion, but it it appears to be taken. I can see how one might not find the name appealing if not a part of that audience. Is cryptocurrency content something that interests you in general? If so, can think of a name that wouldn’t be off putting but still communicate the intent of the site?
- SuDa2103 5y agoHi All, I build side projects occasionally, and thought that something like this was needed! Would love to know your thoughts :)
- abetusk 5y agoThis is very nice, thanks for creating this! I think there's a lot of potential in the space of news aggregator sites that focus on cryptocurrency and it's very cool to see people exploring this space. Here's my two cents: * Tie in the signup, voting, etc. with actual cryptocurrency. This is what stacker.news (SN) [0] does and I think is an idea with a lot of potential. * Put the comments and other content under a libre/free license so that the community can benefit from content generated. HN, SN and a host of other sites don't do this and are worse for it, in my opinion * Make the code open source. This provides transparency to your community and builds trust, as well as allows others to participate in the direction if they choose * This is more of a personal preference, but I would opt for a "cleaner" more minimal look, more akin to HN or SN. - SuDa2103 5y agoAll interesting points thank you. I don't know much about the free licenses point, but will certainly look into it
- garren 5y agoKind of on topic: Dare I ask, is there anything “web3” about your site? I ask out of curiosity, but also since it seems like a great opportunity to leverage…uh…whatever the hell is behind that term. Off topic: what stack? What drove your decisions?
- SuDa2103 5y agoHaha there is nothing currently "web3" about this, but that's subject to change! Stack: Ruby on rails What drove that decision? I like coding in ruby, I'm quite familiar with it and wanted to be able to iterate on something quickly
- garren 5y agoI think your biggest challenge will be building/maintaining a community, along with basic moderation and forum rules. Definitely watching to see how it goes!
- bitxbitxbitcoin 5y agoSigned up! Left a comment. Good luck.
- SuDa2103 5y agoThanks so much!

- SuDa2103 5y agoYes and sites like Crypto Panic! What I wanted to do was focus on building a community with quality discussions, as opposed to (in some cases) the homepage being filled with information about daily price moves
- mettamage 5y agoAnd you call it hodler news? I get that finding a good name is difficult but hodlernews? Is it because it almost sounds like hackernews? Crypto has many interesting things. Hodling and price movements, while perhaps the most lucrative, are also the least interesting. At least, from a curiosity point of view. Names I would think of are more like: Blockchainthreads Blockshardnews I am not fully hitting the mark, but basically a more technical name or a sociocultural name that doesn’t sound too mainstream (I have a hard time thinking of one).
- noodles_nomore 5y agoI'd guess that if you're hodling you don't care so much about charts and are looking further into the future.
- BrissyCoder 5y agoThere's also https://rekt.news/ https://rekt.news/
- YXNjaGVyZWdlbgo 5y agoLooks more like a reddit clone tbh.
- verdverm 5y agoCertainly does not have a layout that makes me think HN
- Urgo 5y agoOn a large screen the formatting makes it look really weird. https://imgur.com/a/6pR9nYl https://imgur.com/a/6pR9nYl
- dave333 5y agoNo RSS feed - so straight into the bitbucket as far as I'm concerned
