Will Nuclear Fusion Ever Power the World?
- simonblack 5y agoPossibly. But I do know personally that fusion power has been "twenty years away" for at least sixty years.
- joak 5y agoAt least two well funded startups are aiming at connecting to the grid in less than 10 years. - MIT's Commonwealth Fusion Systems is taking the safe path of the tokamak but with a high temp superconductor. They plan to reach breakeven in 2025 (produce more energy than they put in). Deployment in the early 2030s. - Helion goes for a totally new approach with aneutronic fusion and direct production of electricity (ie no boiling water). Net electricity in 2024. Backed by Sam Altman (he put $375M of his own money). Deployment to the grid before the end of the decade. https://news.mit.edu/2021/MIT-CFS-major-advance-toward-fusion-energy-0908 https://news.mit.edu/2021/MIT-CFS-major-advance-toward-fusio... https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamesconca/2021/11/09/helion-energy-raises-500-million-on-the-fusion-power-of-stars/ https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamesconca/2021/11/09/helion-en...
