In practice the true effect of mirrorless cameras and their new lens mounts are in how they affect the optical formulas that manufacturers are choosing. No longer does an optical designer have to make the same compromises when they can assume that distortion, vignetting, etc. can all be corrected in camera and in software. The shorter flange distance gives more options for optical designs that may allow for smaller or more efficient designs. The other interesting development has been with the use of linear motors for moving lens elements which is allowing for significantly improved autofocus speeds on lenses that would traditionally have been expected to focus slowly.
