Squeak smalltalk port for iPhone/Touch
- gojomo 18y agoWonderful, but -- doesn't this violate the 'no runtimes/interpreters' Apple rule?
- gecko 18y agoI unfortunately can't find the link at the moment, but Apple has granted the Squeak project a special exemption.
- cubicle67 18y agoNow this is just cruel to Sun, giving them a false sense of hope for their iPhone JVM... I sort of hope Java doesn't ever make it to the iPhone, but I'd love to see some other languages.
- cubicle67 18y agoPossibly, if it were being distributed via the App Store, but this is not. Instead, it is aimed only (at the moment) at paid up iPhone devs who can build and install it on their own hardware without approval from Apple. I'm interested in how they're going to make the Squeak UI usable on such a small screen. Guess I'll have to try it :)
- musiciangames 18y agoHere is the author's comment from the Squeak mail list: "Well you have to read the license then decide if you are violating it. And yes Apple in theory will review submitted applications and deny deployment based on what they do, how they do it, how they are documented etc. etc. How that process works I do not know. Strip(p)ing the compiler could be needed, old VisualWorks users can remember the joys of this and why..." http://www.nabble.com/-squeak-dev--Squeak-and-the-iPhone-td17771661.html#a17771661 http://www.nabble.com/-squeak-dev--Squeak-and-the-iPhone-td1... So the VM will be crippled, at least at a marketing channel level, and perhaps at a tech level too.
