You’re talking about a very very small subset of developers. Those that (likely) went to a top US college, are in SF and got snapped up by a FAANG.
The other 95% of developers globally never get that experience. Don’t be upset with what you have just because of the skewed crowd on here.
If you’d like to try for that then do some leetcode practice and apply, but I wouldn’t be setting expectations high as it’s very difficult to succeed. Might be worth putting up a portfolio on GitHub or somewhere too.
- HNqThrowaway 5y agoWell that's somewhat comforting at least. It just feels so normalized here on HN but the demographics are understandably skewed.
- ssss11 5y agoAs the other commenter mentioned, perhaps in the US it is fairly common. I’m not in the US and it’s not common here.
- halfmatthalfcat 5y agoNope. Most of my circle are making near 200k+ TC average. None of us have CS degrees, live in SF or work at FAANG.
- HNqThrowaway 5y agoOof
- newaccount74 5y agoBut I assume that you probably do have a degree (any degree is a big advantage when applying for jobs, especially if it's a technical degree), and I also assume that it took you a lot more than 6 months of experience to get to 200k.
- halfmatthalfcat 5y agoTwo of them did not finish college. Yes it took a while (less than 10 years) but you can make your way to high levels of comp by just being competent.
- ssss11 5y agoOk well I live in western, non-US country and no one I know is earning that as a dev.
