Not sure about the lenses in the title - they state that most lenses will remain compatible with newer mounts and some vintage lenses even increase in popularity. So, this is like it has always been: Buy expensive lenses, to keep them over 30+ years. Buy cameras every 5-10 years, to get the new features. I have 15k worth of lenses and they stick with me across camera upgrades. I am not as far as attached to my cameras.
- dylan604 5y agoCamera bodies have pretty much become annual upgrades like phones. There's nothing wrong with the one you have, but the new one just has that "one more thing" to them.
- sudosysgen 5y agoI disagree. There has been basically no improvement in image quality (a tiny bit) since the Sony A7r2, which is now 7 years ago. The image quality of phones still improves a lot every year, though they are approaching their limit.
- Helmut10001 5y agoIt is less about image quality but more about what you can do with the cameras. Smaller? 60fps? 120fps? 360°? AI? 40MP? 100MP? All of this _can_ be an argument to upgrade, even if image quality has improved zero.
- sudosysgen 5y agoThe A7r2 can do 42MP. It's not really practical to have any more megapixels. The rest of the things are useless to 99.9% of people, so it's just a gimmick or convenience update. That's where we're at for cameras. Phones however still see big image quality improvements, and you could take pictures that were previously impossible as they added and improved suppmentary cameras.
- dylan604 5y agoWe've already seen cameras running on Android. Eventually, we'll see cameras with all of the artificial image manipulation that you are seeing in the phones. I'm not so sure that's a good thing, but it will be done. At that point, it will be this annual update cycle
- sudosysgen 5y agoThe A7r2 actually does run android. You can even sideload APKs. It does some level of image manipulation, if you ask it to. The issue is that photographers want to be in control of their image, so the generally use RAW files. Because of that, the artificial image manipulation is left to your computer for best results (I often use the new AI features of Lightroom, they're great)
- Helmut10001 5y ago> 42MP. It's not really practical to have any more megapixels. Reminds me of Bill Gates comment in 1981 on IBM's 640KB usable RAM limit: > 640K is more memory than anyone will ever need
- thg 5y agoThat's maybe true for Sony shooters obsessed with their spec sheets, but bodies have usually been ageing fairly well for the past few years. The Nikon D850, for example, has been out for over 4 years now and it's still among the best one can buy.
- elxr 5y agoNot true at all. All camera makers take years (some times 5 or more) to update their sensors to newer versions. And while feature updates like better EVFs or better video specs are a bit more frequent, they aren't yearly. Probably closer to 3 years for most brands other than Sony.
- dylan604 5y agoI wan't meaning to imply each manufacturer releases a new camera per year. It's sort of a leap frogging of each vendor releasing something better than the other vendor's previous release.
