Not that several camera makers make EF mount cameras and third party lens makers make EF mount lenses, like Yongnuo, Samyang, Schneider, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, Cosina and Carl Zeiss.
Be very careful investing in lenses that have a short flange focal distance. In other words, where the distance from the mount to the sensor is short. We went big on Sony E mount primes for shooting video. When we moved to Blackmagic Design Ursa and pocket cine cameras with Canon mounts we couldn’t adapt the lenses and had to get rid of them. The general point here is that as you grow as a shooter your needs will change and you’ll be far happier if you can adapt your old lenses somehow.
You can, for example, put an EF mount lens on a Sony E mount camera, but not the other way around.
What my media dept has done is to standardize on Canon EF mount lenses. We now have a great collection of L series and cine lenses that will work on everything from our 5Ds to BMD Ursa 12K to our pocket cine cameras.
Don’t get vendor locked in and make sure you retain a few options.
- petre 5y agoDo the EF lenses retain the autofocus capability on cine cameras or do you even need it in cinematography? The only drawback with longer flange is more complicated designs for wide angle lenses. That didn't stop Canon from making a rectilinear 15 mm EF lens.

They are being discontinued at these manufacturers as well. I was looking into validating a range of EF mount lenses for a specific application a couple years ago and for every vendor we talked to, they indicated that some of their lenses were either newly discontinued or soon to be discontinued. No matter what the lens manufacturers are saying, I'm confident that they will slowly be discontinuing their DSLR lines over the coming few years.
