How are stories ranked?
The basic algorithm divides points by a power of the time since a story was submitted. Comments in threads are ranked the same way. Other factors affecting rank include user flags, anti-abuse software, software which demotes overheated discussions, account or site weighting, and moderator action.

Sometimes a story with 3 points will show up on the frontpage, sometimes a story with 20 points won't show up anywhere. The exact mechanism is not obvious for the common users of the board.

- blurbleblurble 5y agoThis post was at #1 within 20 minutes and stayed on the front page for a few hours before suddenly disappearing. That struck me as really weird. Now I understand that there are some moderator controlled weights. Yes I'm a nerd so I did a little `curl | grep` thing to find it way way down at the end.
