If accurate, this would make cryptocurrency by far the largest source of foreign cash for the North Korean government. For context, total exports from North Korea in 2021 were estimated at ~$150 million US in value, mostly subsidized purchases by China.
- daniel-cussen 5y agoThere's also printing dollars, I expect they've gotten good at that by this point. Last I read the US Treasury spends $1 printing a $100 bill, that's a huge amount of seignorage. All counterfeiters have to do is print a close-enough bill at say $20 and they're making money.
