If you're into this sort of calligraphy, absolutely check out these works:
• The Book of Kells[1] in Dublin — this is considered to be the masterpiece of Western calligraphy. If you're ever in Dublin, don't leave without paying a visit to this!
• Meetings with Remarkable Manuscripts by Christopher de Hameml — get a hardcover edition of this book; it has absolutely gorgeous selection of artwork from 12 of the most spectacular "illuminated manuscripts" (including the Book of Kells) in the world. The writer is a marvelous storyteller. This hardcover edition is definitely one of my "prized possessions".
You can browse a lot of these works in great detail on this[3] excellent visual arts website by the Getty Research Institute website.

- andrepd 5y agoTruly amazing craftsmanship. A shame it was all put to use writing bibles and books of hours and saint's lives x)
- simonebrunozzi 5y agoI only found this reference [0] on Getty's website, but not the actual book. Edit: the Book of Kells is fabulous! [0]: https://www.getty.edu/museum/programs/lectures/de_hamel_lecture.html https://www.getty.edu/museum/programs/lectures/de_hamel_lect...
- kashyapc 5y agoSorry, I could've been clearer. The entire book of de Hamel is not available on Getty; you have to buy the hardcover copy to get the full deal. :-) What I meant was, some of the illuminated manuscripts reviewed (including some gorgeous images from the real thing) in de Hamel's book are available on getty.edu. E.g. you can find the 16th century illuminated manuscript, "Spinola Hours" (reviewed in the book I mentioned) here[1]. You have to scroll twice to see the list of 182 images. And you can in turn browse the illustrations it such this[2] calendar-page miniature painting for the month of May. You can see people singing and making merry on a boat, along with other drawings—all on a small page. Note though, one doesn't need to be religious in any sense (I'm not) to appreciate these art works.
