Spot on. The UK is a particularly acute example.
Dwindling fossil fuel reserves is something that most people have known about for decades, now. I used to frequent forums, read books and watch documentaries about Peak Oil as a teenager in the 2000s.
Fast-forward to 2022 and I've just been offered a "deal" by my energy provider of £3000 up from £1200 last year. Unsurprising given this country relies on imported natural gas for almost all of its heating and over half of its electricity generation.
And yet, much of the conversation in the press is literally, unironically blaming green initiatives and calling for cutting the meagre taxes that fund them.
We're in this mess and facing a bigger mess because every successive government has kicked the can same as with everything else. Choosing a new one with a popularity contest every four years is starting to seem naive and unfit for purpose, frankly. The failure is systemic.
