I find this atricle to be rather hollow basing rather big claims on just the success of AlphaFold and Facebook's ability to manipulate people. Scientific theories will continue to be the pillar of scientific understanding. Just because we are able to make predictions without preexisting theories (eg. croudsourced protein folding) and just because we are able to make machines capable of making predictions without preexisting theories, does not mean that the nature of scientific understanding changes. An entity making (even accurate) predictions is an oracle. Scientific understanding is the deconstruction of the oracle, not the reliance on the oracle.
