I am in medical industry. Once I couldn't fathom why a company making a messaging app could think they were "changing the world". It dawned on me that value and meaning can be relative. You can always spin the arguments and convince yourself what you are doing is meaningful, or as least to your employees. For example, didn't Amazon empowered consumers very wide choices that's previously not available? Didn't they created tens of thousands jobs across diverse geographical areas?
- decafninja 5y agoI'm curious - what is the compensation like for a SWE working in med-tech? i.e. software that drives mission (and life) critical things during surgery, etc.? I would hope such people would be compensated and treated very well, but I fear I would not be surprised at all of they were paid significantly less than a SWE working on optimizing better ways to post kitten pictures online.
- andrewon 5y agoYou are right. The base salary could be similar to tech but bonus and stock are generally way lower. My company has problem keeping SWEs.
- decafninja 5y agoAre SWEs (and tech employees in general) considered a cost center there? If so, who is the profit center? Sales?
- andrewon 5y agoYes R&D is cost. Sales is profit.
