What I love about this decade’s net worth estimates is that it was always possible, people just didn't do it to this scale.
Like, when you look at the Fortune 500 companies, they mostly all have unnecessary share dilution amongst many founders and way too many employees, following an antiquated and outdated rubric of how much money someone should have. Or how many jobs were created as opposed to the purpose of those jobs or the purpose of the corporation concept. These corporate forever homes always left a bad taste in my mouth, because I would also meet other founders and employees that wanted to replicate that instead of the precision strike on a market inefficiency while keeping control of all the proceeds. Too many people feel like giving up pieces of the company is validation. “We got a meeting with this VC” or “This VC invested!” instead of “wow we really gave up a large chunk of the company and they get paid before us”.
I will concede that these organizations and founders likely operated in an environment where investors were not willing to respect that much control of a single founder. But that time has also long passed, especially when looking outside of the US on other exchanges. So its just a matter of culture catching up.
As liquidity and the size of the money supply expanded rapidly over the prior decade, there has been absolutely no reason for people to just stop at single digit billions in net worth.
When I mean stop, I mean become risk averse.
Bill Hwang leveraging up on a liquid $20bn and continuing to trade like a Robinhood trader that can barely pass pattern day trader regulations is exactly what should be more common! There is no reason for someone like him to be in wealth preservation mode just because he got a theoretically improbable windfall. I would love to see much more of this. Other people like Bill exist, and only make the news when their private trades blow up a few banks.
CZ having an estimated net worth of $95bn due to 90% ownership of Binance which is just sitting on hundreds of tokens of varying liquidity is great! That’s way better than these other founders with it mostly in a single stock that has illiquid assets and revenues that are a fraction of the marketcap. If he conducts an IPO and receives even more liquid fiat and becomes #1 wealthiest by private wealth, way to go! There is $1 trillion on the table right now. And then he will be able to be judged at the same standard as the shareholder-revenue wealth people, except his will be much larger and still more liquid.
Elon Musk and Bezos types are too risk averse for my taste, there should be people above them by pure financialization and trading at this point, from my perspective that is the point of all the liquidity added to the market. Culture just hasnt caught up yet, but it is. This decade is going to be fun. Looking forward to being exposed to the first publicly estimated trillionaires, as it just validates what I already perceive as possible.
