It is an interesting article. I think there are some valid points here in how we are no longer covering hard concepts in the manner we use to. At the same time I've always spent more time worrying about the large scale design and patterns and the minor implementation details that can in theory be optimized away in the future if you don't code yourself into a corner. All of these concepts and tricks of the old programming days are still important, at the same time with larger systems and changing nature of software development we need to start teaching the hard lessons about large distributed system design, and this is the area I suspect schools are failing to provide for.
