I stopped reading when the author listed chicken pox alongside much more lethal childhood diseases. That said, I'm still pro vaccination for chicken pox, and went out of my way to get my child vaccinated even though it is extremely uncommon here in Belgium.
- WA 5y agoPlease take a guess why chicken pox is uncommon in Belgium.
- Ichthypresbyter 5y agoThe chickenpox vaccination is uncommon in Belgium- it's not on the standard list of childhood vaccinations, and fewer than 2.5% of Belgian children get it. Chickenpox itself is certainly not uncommon- estimated at 113,000 cases per year, which is essentially the same number as the birth rate. In other words, every Belgian child can be expected to get chickenpox at some point. Source here: https://adc.bmj.com/content/101/1/16 https://adc.bmj.com/content/101/1/16
- neuronic 5y ago> Varicella is highly communicable, with an infection rate of 90% in close contacts. [1] Good call on the vaccination, chickenpox is no joke at all. The prognosis combined with the massive rate of infection if left unchecked is unsettling. [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chickenpox#Prognosis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chickenpox#Prognosis
- yourusername 5y agoSo odd to call chicken pox lethal. It's not in the government vaccination program in the Netherlands. 97% of kids have had it. I've never heard of someone dying from it. When i was a kid getting chicken pox was very much not a big deal and expected.
