Microsoft and co. probably have the leverage to move that needle a little if they really wanted to.
- junon 5y agoNo, they don't. Companies don't fuck around with the DMCA stuff.
- mastazi 5y agoAnd that's exactly why it's not worth it to keep your data on such services. Someone can make an unsubstantiated DMCA claim and in most cases your account will be taken down automatically without even any human verification. Which means that even if you did nothing wrong, you will still lose all your data.
- junon 5y agoThis isn't unique to Github, though. You're advocating for absolutely no use of third party services, then.
- mastazi 5y agoExactly, in the last 2-3 years I closed more than a dozen of accounts, from Facebook to Google and more :-) Something like Netflix, I'm OK with, even if they close my account for some arcane reason, I'll just make a new one. The services I'm going to avoid are those where losing the account would mean losing important data (email, docs, etc.) and those where a data breach could mean sensitive data being exposed (e.g. non-encrypted messaging apps, doctor's online booking systems etc.). And yes I actively advocate for this with other people too. I'm not a fundamentalist or anything but I want people I care about to understand the risks associated to using online services that you don't really own.
