>Enter Yggdrasil
This is perhaps the worst branding I've seen in awhile. It's impossible to say correctly without being taught, difficult to remember, and difficult to spell. It's almost like they don't want their efforts to be acknowledged.
- nynx 5y agoIt’s pretty easy to say and quite memorable in my opinion. Are you aware of the Norse roots of the name?
- ehutch79 5y agoFor normal, mainstream people, it isn't.
- donohoe 5y agoIn your bubble that might be the case, but that’s not necessarily true for a lot of other people.
- rnotaro 5y agoSomething like "Zeus" is mainstream. Yggdrasil is not. You can lookup the Google Trends [1] to see that it's not really popular outside of Northen Europe. - sannee 5y agoThe first sentence on the website says: > Yggdrasil is an implementation of a new name-independent routing scheme and functions as an end-to-end encrypted IPv6 network. Somehow I don't think this project is aimed at "normal, mainstream people"...
- jokethrowaway 5y agoThe set of techies and the set of nordic people are both minorities in the world - but they don't overlap.
- CRConrad 5y ago> The set of techies and the set of nordic people [...] don't overlap. Huh? So there are no Nordic techies?!?
- WJW 5y agoTbh, you don't have to be Nordic to have a basic grasp of mythology from around the world and Yggdrasil is pretty commonly known. Even if people just know it from Marvel comics or heavy metal or something.
- literallyWTF 5y agoNo it isn’t man. In what world it commonly known?
- WJW 5y agoMine, apparently. I don't have any particular connection to Norse mythology afaict, but I've encountered the term "Yggdrasil" at least half a dozen time just surfing on the net.
- hossbeast 5y agoNormal mainstream people don't understand TCP either. They don't need to know about ygdrassil for it to succeed.
- tomrod 5y agoMeh. It's common enough that people will catch on. "Worldtree" is too 1990s. Better to have something with the power of myth and lore.
- Invictus0 5y agoSounds like some sort of medication
- literallyWTF 5y agoThey couldn’t come up with anything else? Shit you could’ve just named it after some random fruit and it would’ve been better than this dungeon and dragons sounding ass name.
- toyg 5y agoThese days it's more a Thor/Marvel-sounding name, but anyway, it's actually from Norse mythology. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yggdrasil https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yggdrasil
- russellallen 5y agoYes indeed. People will think it is some sort of Linux distro.
- toyg 5y ago> It's impossible to say correctly without being taught I mean, the world of tech is littered with "permanently questionable" pronounciations, one more makes no difference. SQL, GIF, LOG4J, etc etc, they are all successful products despite people not agreeing on how they should be pronounced. I'm Italian so I read it like it's written: "ee-gg-dra-seel".
- ssss11 5y agoTrue, but on a spectrum, the acronym ones are even easier to try to pronounce than a word like Yggdrasil
- civilized 5y agoHe's marketing to the kind of people for whom Yggdrasil is a memorable name. When I was a nerd teenager in the 90s, reading F-PROT's built-in encyclopedia of computer viruses, it was hard not to notice the abundance of Tolkien and similar references. Hackers have always loved this stuff.
- charcircuit 5y agoIt's from Minecraft
- lanecwagner 5y agoMinecraft lifted it too
- charcircuit 5y agoI figure most people recognize it from Minecraft than wherever Mojang got it from.
- ptato 5y agowhere is it used in Minecraft? I've played that game for years and I don't know what you're talking about
- charcircuit 5y agoI've seen it in the launcher.
- hffftz 5y ago> What is yggdrasil minecraft? > Yggdrasil is the name of the authentication system that is currently used for authenticating user credentials for Minecraft. ... Mojang has said that this authentication system should be used by everyone for custom logins, but credentials should never be collected from users.
- aesyondu 5y agoNot in my case. I watched Overlord and immediately recognized it. Didn't know it was from Norse mythology.
- Animats 5y agoPlus it's a forgotten Linux distro.
- Proven 5y ago
- waynesonfire 5y agoand i guess, y7l doesn't help... :pondering:
- ralls_ebfe 5y agoOnly for people, who neglected their mythology studies. Ask veit ek standa, heitir Yggdrasill, hár baðmr, ausinn hvíta auri; þaðan koma dǫggvar, þærs í dala falla, stendr æ yfir, grænn, Urðar brunni.
