I am a mathematician. (assistant prof) I, and many people I know, are doing reasonably well. Good salary, good teaching load, the only downside from my perspective is I had to move somewhere I wasn't really eager to move. The job market got squeezed the last couple of years, and a few good people were completely SOL. Still more sweated bullets and had to take a temporary stopgap position for a year or two. Some got less good jobs than I thought they deserved. But overall, I think our profession is doing okay.
