  Yep, and now we are in a better position than we have been in a long time since a number of engines are building their own indexes. In my opinion the most interesting in this regard (i.e. building its own index) is marginalia who shows that a meaningful addition to the search engine space can be run by a single person on single consumer PC running in a living room.
