The Founders Would Like to Remind You They’ve Been Dead for Nearly 200 Years
- JoeAltmaier 5y agoDisengenuous. Sure technology has changed, but people are still people. That's why the grand words of America's founding documents still resonate with us. Given, some perspective is warranted. They had indentured servitude, slavery and subjugated women. Who wants all that back? But the good stuff, that's still good today. Edit: what the hell, title? Pretending to speak for the Founding Fathers? That's some chutzpa. They wrote reams; you want to know what they thought, read that.
- PaulHoule 5y agoThere was that one weird trick that they mentioned ‘slave’ exactly once to reify the concept but failed to define who a slave was, what rights they had or did not have, etc.
- PaulHoule 5y agoIn times like these one wonders if ‘consent of the governed’ is meaningful at all. That is, somebody ratified the constitution 200 years ago but nobody alive today has given their consent to it. People today will wave the constitution around when their interpretation of it is compatible with what they want, but fundamentally most people today think it is good when their side wins and bad when the other side wins. I think of the ending of The Parallax View where a politician is practicing empty platitudes in an empty conference hall until he gets shot and crashes through rows of tables in a out of control golf cart. People still say they like Schoolhouse Rock but from top to the bottom people are going through the motions in something they don’t believe in.
