Djokovic pictured maskless at public event one day after positive Covid test
- nness 5y agoFor those reading articles like this and interested in the Australia v. Djokovic row, what it means for border security, testing/vaccination mandates, etc. its also worth remembering that up until this story broke the biggest political issue in Australia was that the Federal government was not providing free rapid antigen tests like other countries -- despite rapidly increasing cases against reduce mandates. The reason being "we don't want to undercut retail stores" and "you can't expect everything for free" (quotes almost verbatim) An individual rapid test was selling for $25 AUD ($17~ USD), if you could find them at all. A kebab shop even sold the tests alongside their kebabs on Uber Eats... it was getting silly. Irrespective of your views on any of the above issues, the government is masterful at changing the conversation whenever they're in bad light. Its a hallmark of the current government.

PCR tests in Serbia are processed in just few official labs. Private labs are not allowed to do PCR testing. Results are typically completed after 24h (sometimes later), and you have to login on government portal (euprava.rs) to check them. There should be an email when results are ready, but email usually comes few hours later. Few days ago my wife got both email and SMS exactly on midnight, looks like there's a cron job. So if you don't refresh page on portal every now and then, you'll get notified even later. It's very realistic that Novak was tested on 16th but didn't find out results until later on the 17th or even on midnight. I'd like to emphasize these are not exceptional circumstances in his case but quite typical how it works around here. Also, there's an official possibility to get released from isolation after 7 days with a negative PCR test and if you don't have symptoms. That would explain his movements afterwards. Again, this option to break quarantine is official and available to all Serbian citizens. Btw. we also have rapid antigen tests which are quicker and more often used, but since they're less reliable you'll typically need a PCR when leaving country, depending on destination. My guess (just guess) is that Novak took a routine PCR, maybe for planned flight or something similar. When you're taking tests every few days without any symptoms it's not reasonable to be isolated while you wait for results.
