If the only way to win is to be innovative and rich, and the only way to be rich is to ride a gold rush, then by god we’ll make a whole new industry to attract investment to fund said gold rush. This is my “bullshit industries” thesis - an economy wide manifestation of bullshit jobs. Maybe this cyclic destruction and reinvention is one of the ways we know of to keep rent seeking in check, enable social mobility and the sustain the illusion of progress.
