I share a similar story. I grew up on IRC, becoming a moderator for a jailbreaking website's support channel, and for the first time experienced friendship outside of school and outside of my typical age range. This directly impacted my career aspirations and is probably a very large reason why I felt like I could become a software developer and successful businessperson in middle school. It shows that communication is important no matter what medium it's undertaken on. Humans thrive off of maximizing connections.
