I think these two are talking past each other a bit because they're ignoring the fact that running your own server is still a complete pain. Any technical or social concept that could possibly require mass adoption of self-hosting is just moot until it as easy as: 1) plug in device to wall 2) connect to wi-fi 3) login once 4) start installing services 5) never worry about security or backups again. You could even mail out the devices to bootstrap your network, BankAmericard-in-Fresno style.
There are people that would run their own server on principle, and there are many, many more that would do it if you had to do in order to get on a cool social network with all your friends and top celebrities or whatever. I want to run my own server, but I don't because:
-I don't want my data unencrypted on a cloud VPS
-I don't know a good dynamic DNS provider off the top of my head
-I don't want to host services on my primary desktop unsandboxed and it takes up too much power
-If I use another device I would need to: 1) segment my LAN, which my ISP router doesn't seem to support 2) manually configure updates, backups, port knocking, etc. 3) string cables around or otherwise find some hidden or unaesthetic place to put it
