- tjs8rj 5y agoAlways scratching my head at the language around obesity by some, even experts, as being a disease (as mentioned in your article). Is it contracted? Do they think the cause of obesity is some genuine biological anamoly or defect or disorder? Obesity was almost non existent 100 years ago, even 50 years ago. The vast majority of obesity is caused by poor diet (in part due to our food supply, in large part also due to our choices) and lack of exercise. There are thyroid issues, there’s more chemicals in stuff we don’t quite understand the effects of, but the majority of it by far is individual behavior.
- d0mine 5y agoDon't you find it contradictory: "non existent" vs. "individual choices"? What happened that people suddenly started making bad decisions?
- tjs8rj 5y agoThe vast majority of obesity is caused by poor diet (in part due to our food supply, in large part also due to our choices) and lack of exercise. The major changes are: food supply (more addictive, more calorie-dense, etc), more sedentary lifestyles (tech creating mass convenience in everything from shopping to traveling to entertainment, etc), and individual choices (influenced by both the above, but also increasing acceptance of obesity, mental health, etc)
- legerdemain 5y agoHow did individual behavior suddenly go bad 50 years ago? I know that no external factors can ever explain individual decision-making, and especially individual responsibility, and that social and dietary "sciences" are delusions created by the spiritual adversary of rationality, but perhaps there is something we can meditate on to help us cope with the realization that people became intrinsically more sinful and flawed just a generation or two ago.
