Another thing is that you are used to seeing yourself flipped in a mirror, but you are unflipped in photos. Everyone's face is asymmetrical, and most people have a dominate side which you will instinctively focus. When you look at a photo of yourself, you will focus on the wrong side at first, and all your features are flipped. That is why you often feel a flicker of disgust when looking at yourself. Your brain recognizes it is you, but everything is on the wrong side.
Our mental image of ourselves is flipped compared to everyone else. It's not just self-criticism that makes us dislike photos of ourselves that other people find fine, we are literally seeing a different person than what we expect. People who take lots of pictures eventually get over this because their mental image adjusts to be that of the picture, not of the mirror. But for those of use that are new to selfies, there is often an initial feeling "I'm so ugly," when you look just fine.
