I've been involved in the blockchain space for several years and I think this is absolutely critical.
The entire decentralization and security aspect depends on people running their own servers. While this shouldn't be imposed on regular users, it's unfathomable to think that a big investor or a big finance firm would rely on a server hosted by some third party... If you're transferring millions of dollars worth of tokens on a blockchain, why would you take on the third-party risk of trusting someone else's node/API when you can remove that risk entirely by running your own server? There is a certain threshold of value above which you absolutely do want to be running your own node and it would be foolish not to.
IMO, this is one of my biggest concerns about Ethereum. It's very difficult to run your own node.
