My father in law delivered newspapers in his later years. Social Security was not quite enough and he enjoyed the work.
Unlike many carriers, he got to know a ton of people oh his route.
I did it with him a few times when the paper had inserts, or the weather was onerous.
These people, many retirees, or just lonely living out in the sticks, carried on conversations with him that lasted years!
And every year at Christmas, gifts would be exchanged. He had cards, or some home made thing and it went into the box, or the porch to all those people he knew.
And some were on their porch with coffee and maybe a smoke waiting. Others would come out to the road, lean into the window and chat for a bit.
And he got more than he ever gave for Xmas. Same deal, little bit of cash, or home made stuff, jars of jam, cookies, and cards, trinkets.
I found the whole thing pretty amazing. When he passed on, quite a few people showed up. And it was the same for all of them: "He delivered my paper and we miss him"
I live this story. Little girl likes the garbage guy and has no barriers!
This is the kind of stuff that makes the world more awesome.
