My mother has been using Linux exclusively since I was in high school. Occasionally I have to head over to her place to deal with some weird issue but it has become less and less common over time, to the point where I am almost surprised when problems arise. Of course she has very straightforward needs. If Firefox and VLC work she has 95% of her needs met, and the remaining 5% are related to her printer which has not been a problem for a long time now. For some people who need specific Windows software this is probably much harder, and likewise for anyone who purchase some obscure hardware that only has Windows drivers.
