The culture I would like you to try for is one in which people don't feel comfortable questioning (or, rather, vociferously protesting through abuse of the flag feature) the validity of posts celebrating the lives of black luminaries. In general, the level of soft racism on HN is disheartening and certainly warps how I tend to respond. I join you in wishing that I didn't feel the need to mirror a lack of extended dignity with indignation.
- dang 5y agoI'm not sure that's a correct interpretation of https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29840535 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29840535. To me it read like the generic "why is this on HN" comment that people routinely post when they see a story that's non-tech or otherwise doesn't fit their (mistaken) model of what HN is supposed to be. (What annadane accurately called "the usual tired trope": https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29840915 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29840915.) It shows up a lot on "$Person has died" threads, among other places.
