Apple ditched Intel, and it paid off
- mikece 5y agoTo frame this in purely financial terms is to bury the lede. The massive jump in overall processing power while consuming less electricity has done more to drive sales than the fact they aren't paying Intel to put x86-64 chips in their machines. I had zero interest in buying another Mac until I saw just how much performance could be had from a Mac mini with the original M1: enough that serious video editors were comparing an $800 machine to a $15k Mac Pro and seeing that while the Mac Pro always won it was actually competitive, something that would have been absurd to suggest with the Intel-powered Mac minis.
