Before CarPlay, I’d agree, but no more. Now the car infotainment is basically just a monitor and interface for my phone, and I couldn’t be happier. I can keep on upgrading my phone and the tech in my car can keep on improving.
- pishpash 5y agoYou're still locked into an API that will definitely be obsolete in 10 years.
- buildsjets 5y agoThis is a non-problem. Vanishingly few people keep a car for more than 10 years.
- excalibur 5y agoGod forbid anyone buys a used car.
- martinpw 5y agoAverage age of a car in the US is 12.1 years: https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/28/cars-on-american-roads-keep-getting-older.html https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/28/cars-on-american-roads-keep-... - buildsjets 5y agoThank you for validating that my comment is factual and correct.
- deelowe 5y agoAnd doesn’t work worth a crap. Can’t pinch zoom on google maps for example.
- clajiness 5y agoSource if this is so definitive?
- nexuist 5y agoWhat API? It's just mirroring the screen like HDMI. Apple can put whatever they want on any existing CarPlay display.
- cbhl 5y agoI would suggest that any car you can obtain now will be obsolete in 10 years: Either the car is electric, and the battery will wear out in 3-5 years OR The car takes gas, and you'll need to replace it (with an electric one, or carbon capture to offset its emissions) within 10 years to avoid catastrophic global warming
- avianlyric 5y ago> Either the car is electric, and the battery will wear out in 3-5 years More like 8-12 years. [0] https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/electric/how-long-do-electric-car-batteries-last/ https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/electric/how-long-do-electric-...
- momirlan 5y agoNo worries, it will burn in 2 years...
- micromacrofoot 5y agomost electric cars have batteries warrantied for 8 years... there are EVs on the road with batteries older than that today (the Nissan Leaf was originally released 12 years ago)
- pengaru 5y agoBatteries are wear items, you don't throw your car away when the tires run out of tread.
- chrisan 5y agoYour phone will be obsolete first. What viable alternative do you suggest that exists?
