AMD Exploring How to Support Ryzen 5000 on Older Motherboards
- rasz 5y ago"Exploring How to Support" no, they are "now looking at options to allow". There is a difference between looking for technical means of supporting some hardware versus simply _allowing_ motherboard manufacturers to Unblock support that was always there. Since Ryzen turned out to be a success AMD started flirting with artificial market segmentation, copying Intel bad behavior verbatim. Blocking backward compatibility(/1), linking desirable and standard features with upmarket enthusiast SKUs(/2 /3), renaming Northbridge into Chipset to justify marketing lies(/3), manufacturing silly excuses(/4), being intentionally unclear about ECC. AMD Zen CPUs are full SOCs. What they call "chipset" is just a PCIE connected Northbridge. Everything important is integrated inside CPU. pcie, ram, usb 3.0, sata, HD Audio, even RTC/SPI/I2C/SMBus and LPC are on die. You can make perfectly functional system with just an AMD CPU alone. /1 https://www.itworldcanada.com/article/amd-zen-3-processors-will-be-incompatible-with-400-series-and-older-motherboards/430513 https://www.itworldcanada.com/article/amd-zen-3-processors-w... backpedaled on this hard after backlash /2 AMD 'Smart Access Memory' totally requiring 500-series chipset despite being just a fancy marketing name for standard 'PCI Express Resizable BAR' support. Already shipping disabled for 2 prior generations before being announced as 5000 exclusive. Enough uproar and even that crumbles a little bit https://www.extremetech.com/computing/320548-amd-will-support-smart-access-memory-on-ryzen-3000-cpus-for-gaming https://www.extremetech.com/computing/320548-amd-will-suppor... but still linked to "chipset" while implemented entirely inside CPU. /3 x470 was going to support PCIE 4, but then it was made x570 exclusive. https://www.anandtech.com/show/14477/amd-confirms-pcie-4-not-coming-to-older-motherboards https://www.anandtech.com/show/14477/amd-confirms-pcie-4-not... Despite the fact "chipset" doesnt touch PCI lines between CPU and slots. Asus is the only manufacturer with enough volume to dare break AMD ban https://www.eteknix.com/some-asus-x470-and-b450-motherboards-support-pcie-4-0/ https://www.eteknix.com/some-asus-x470-and-b450-motherboards... /4 oh, but but the bios size limit, we cant support all the CPUs on same motherboard (like they did in Socket A days). How will we fit all this microcode, the BIOS chip is 'only' 16MB !??!?!
