I saw a lot of hateful glee over this on Twitter, reddit, etc today. We're all aware that both surface and subsurface trains bunch up and do the exact same thing, right? In Toronto this happens on a depressingly regular basis, and you have to wait in far worse conditions than the comfort of a Tesla.
- Doxin 5y agoRight. But those have emergency exits. No clue how you'd escape from a tunnel this small.
- martythemaniak 5y agoIt's 12' / 3.65m in diameter. Model Y is 1.92m wide, so you just open the door and walk out. Here's a picture: https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2021/04/11/00/41595384-9457687-The_Las_Vegas_Convention_Center_Loop_is_an_underground_transport-a-5_1618098628112.jpg https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2021/04/11/00/41595384-9457687-... The license plate is 12 inches wide, so you about 1.5 feet of walkway on each side of the car, 3 feet if the car pulls over. Here's the London subway: https://www.myuksimcard.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Greater-London.jpg https://www.myuksimcard.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/... Some newer lines have very narrow walkways on the side, but Toronto's subway operator explicitly says you have to use tunnel and avoid signals, tracks and the 3rd rail. https://www.ttc.ca/riding-the-ttc/safety-and-security/emergency-evacuation-procedures https://www.ttc.ca/riding-the-ttc/safety-and-security/emerge.... I really fail to see the superiority of subways here.
- Doxin 5y agoFair enough. Those tunnels are wider than I initially thought. Still, it's putting a lot of faith in the ventilation systems. That said the comparison to the london underground is hardly fair. For starters it has emergency exits in the front giving a LOT more space for egress than the tesla. Not to mention that trains catching fire is much rarer than cars (of any sort) catching fire. I simply don't trust teslas to have gotten reliable enough for small diameter tunnels without service tunnels to not be a problem. Tesla seems to be reinventing the train poorly.
