Snap suing to trademark the word ‘spectacles’ for its smart glasses
- Sanzig 5y ago> Snap’s new complaint posits that there’s been enough media coverage of Spectacles, bolstered by some industry awards and its own marketing including social media, to support its claim that consumers associate the word “spectacles” with the Snap brand. Snap first filed a trademark application for Spectacles in September 2016, “for use in connection with wearable computer hardware” and other related uses “among consumer electronics devices and displays.” I'll admit I'm no keen user of social media, but this is the first time I've heard of this product. The article suggests the last iteration was a massive flop so I'm probably not in the minority here. Also, I find these types glasses-mounted camera products incredibly creepy. It's already bad enough that everyone has a video camera in their pocket, but at least with a smartphone it's somewhat difficult to be covert about recording. With smart glasses anyone on the street could be recording you and you'd be none the wiser.

- bradknowles 5y agoNot if the lenses are 180 degrees FOV, or nearly so. They’re also much more invasive, since they sit on your face and go everywhere you do, including places where people would like to have and expect privacy — like public bathrooms or gym locker rooms.
