China to ban exclusive copy right deals
- andrewon 5y agoThis sounds like a good idea to reduce monopoly. Any downsides? Would love to hear arguments against this.
- dane-pgp 5y agoThe article's actual headline is "China bans most exclusive copyright deals for digital music platforms", which is more accurate (and doesn't contain a typo). It would be nice to have something like this in the West, applying to video streaming services. As a compromise, services could keep exclusivity for a year, for example, before being forced to offer their self-produced content to competitors, for a fee based on the production cost (which would have to be carefully accounted for).

Movie studios were simply forbidden from owning theaters, thus forbidding vertical integration. It would make sense to expand such laws into other areas to limit anti-competitive market power abuses. Instead, even these laws were killed: https://www.polygon.com/2020/8/7/21358637/movie-theater-antitrust-laws-paramount-consent-decrees-movie-studios-theater-chains-netflix-disney https://www.polygon.com/2020/8/7/21358637/movie-theater-anti...
- tssva 5y agoThis was not a law. It was a consent decree which only applied to certain studios.
- tinus_hn 5y agoIs this that far out of the ordinary? Lots of countries have forced licensing laws where you can’t use copyright for instance to prevent your song from being played on the radio.
