Turning this into a decision driven by concerns about sustainability seems very optimistic to me. Your concerns are admirable but I wager most people have more immediate aspects to consider - like being able to afford these things at all.

My daughter is in this demographic and that's exactly why she buys things secondhand - her generation has really bought into the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle messaging. It allows for a guilt-free consumption culture.
